Torafuku

I admit I've only ever heard of Le Tigre ( founders Steve Kuan + Clement Chan's first business) and never really had the opportunity to visit the famous food truck but once word hit the internet that there was going to be a brick and mortar by the same people, I knew I had to put it on my list of to-go's. After much anticipation, they've finally held their grand opening this past Friday and.. you guessed it: I had to go to witness all the hype for myself. Torafuku (寅福) in Japanese means lucky tiger and from that alone, I could get the feel that Torafuku would be into the Asian inspired modern food trend. As you'll see from some of the menu options below, the dishes are what I would consider Japanese nouveau and also follow the izakaya trend of offering share-able food options to pair with drinks.

Sushi on Rice Guide pt.1

So I realized I really like guide and if any of you follow me on Instagram, you'll notice that I eat nigiri/oshi sushi everywhere I can. I'm not a sushi expert and I'm actually mildly allergic to raw fish (which is why I'm really cautious about eating sashimi) but I thought it'd be fun to share with you guys my experience with some of Vancouver's "sushi on rice" offerings (nigiri + oshi sushi in particular).

Sushi Loku (reposted)

Sushi places are everywhere in Vancouver and it's easy to miss gems especially when they look like any ordinary Korean run sushi restaurant. Thank goodness I heard of Sushi Loku a while ago and decided to give it a visit recently. Located on East Broadway and Carolina Street, the exterior of Sushi Loku may not look like much but I can assure you that you'll be pleasantly surprised to find more than what you were looking for.

Taka's Sushi

White Rock is one of the best places to be during the summer in Vancouver - great beaches and a decent variety of patio oriented eateries. Taka's Sushi is really one of White Rock's gems and the fact that I travel all the way from the other side of the city for their sushi says something.

Minami

Okay so if you haven't heard of Minami, chances are you are either 1) not that interested in Vancouver's Japanese food or 2) living and eating under a rock. But if you really haven't heard of them, Minami is one of the Japanese restaurants under the Aburi brand and is the sister restaurant of the popular Miku and relatively new Aburi restaurant, Gyoza Bar (which I did a review of here). Although Minami isn't the first of the Aburi restaurants in Vancouver, I would definitely rank it as first among its sister restaurants. Here's a rundown of my meal during my most recent visit a few days ago.

Sushi Bella

Korean run Japanese restaurants are on the rise in Vancouver and I'm happy to have visited yet another (don't forget Sushi and Roll!) one - Sushi Bella! Unlike many of the sushi restaurants here, Sushi Bella has multiple locations in Vancouver, one being the location in North Vancouver not too far from the Lonsdale Pier that my friend and I visited last month. This spot is definitely trendy and modern which I think is a reason why it is such a hit with a a wide variety of customers. Bella's Chef Kabel claims to bring his experience in Japanese, French, and Italian flavours to the menu...so I guess it was our job to experience them.
