America is seriously all about burgers and Umami Burger is a prime example of excellence sandwiched between two buns. I've heard things about Umami Burger, about how amazing their burgers and fries are - so of course I jumped on the opportunity to try the food for myself when J and I were looking for something to eat at The Grove.
iced green tea
sesame-crusted ahi, mesclun mix, sesame dressing, puffed black rice @12
4/5 - I'm not a fan of salads until you put seared fish with it so yes I liked this salad. The ahi tuna is very flavourful, soft, and fresh which compliments the young greens. Because the burgers don't come with any sides, this salad is a perfect match for the hefty meal ahead.
thin cut fries with house truffle cheese @5.50
5/5 - They weren't kidding when they said the truffle fries were good cause these are AMAZING. Thin and cheesy fries with a obvious hint of truffle flavour is possibly the best way to lead up to Umami's burgers. J and I were honestly battling it out to see who would eat the last fry.
tempura onion rings
thick cut + malt battered @4.50
2.5/5 - Eh. I've had better onion rings. These ones were bland, not crispy, and the only dish I didn't finish.
gochujang glaze, caramelized kimchi, sesame aioli, korean ketchup, scallion-cilantro salad @13
4/5 - I can't even begin to describe the perfection in the patty - it's juicy, cooked medium rare (burger places that let you customize the done-ness of your patty are the best), and absolutely mouthwatering. I wasn't too big a fan of the salad on top but the combination of sauces really do remind me a bit of Korean bbq. Oh I almost forgot but the buns are also slightly grilled and buttered to ensure maximum saliva production. Mmm mm.
truffled aioli, house truffle cheese, truffle glaze @13
5/5 - If you're going to order one burger at Umami Burger, it almost has to be the Truffle Burger. The burger itself is very simple but the flavours are crazy - not overwhelming but just right. The truffle cheese does wonders for the already juicy patty and and grilled buns. I'm starting to think Umami Burger should rename itself to Truffle Cheese Masters.
parmesan frica, shiitake mushroom, roasted tomato, caramelized onions, umami house ketchup @11.50
4/5 - The Umami burger has tons of ingredients but I found that moisture was lacking in the burger as the patty wasn't exactly juicy and the only moisture I could squeeze out was from the onions and ketchup. I do however, like the textures in the Umami as there is a variety of crunch and softness.
It's hard not to like/love Umami Burger really. They have interesting combinations and deliver massive flavour in each burger for a price that is still reasonable. Let's not forget about the truffle fries though, they're really close to stealing the show every meal. The restaurant itself is very modern and the service (at least at The Grove) is pleasant. There's a reason why I managed to squeeze in two trips to Umami Burger within 10 days - I just love it so much.
