Crackle Creme (soft opening)
Union Street is pretty much hipster central with all sorts of cool boutiques and notable eateries like The Parker. Starting this past weekend, Crackle Creme is the cool new kid on the block as it brings the first of its kind here in Vancouver - a dedicated creme brulee cafe. I visited them around 7pm on Sunday during their soft opening to see what this unique little space had to offer.
For their soft opening, they offered five different creme brûlées ($4-6), as well as three drinks offerings and fresh liege waffles (~$3.75). I was impressed with the variety of flavours they were offering: vanilla, organic matcha, orange ginger, chocolate, and Baileys. They all sound promising but who can resist a creme brûlée when there's Baileys involved?
I ordered my Bailey's Irish cream infused creme brûlée ($6) at the counter where the palm-sized ramekin's custard was torched on the spot for a warm and crispy caramel layer of caramel on top. The creme is extremely rich and delightfully creamy although I would've liked it if the Bailey's flavour was less subtle. The caramel layer on top was on point though - thin and sweet. Glad to find that I didn't need to break my spoon to get to the custard at the bottom. :P
I ordered a liege waffle ($3.75) as well since my waffle cravings were tingling. It took a while to make but it was freshly made so no complaints there. The waffle was soft and dense though I felt like it could have been egg-ier and with a sweeter crunch to the infamous caramelization of the pearl sugar.
The space is small but cozy with eight or so bar seats inside. Along with some delicious simple desserts, you'll get a side of Wooden tables, rustic lights, chalkboard menus, and large street facing windows. As of their soft opening, they only accept credit and cash, no debit. I can't say too much about Crackle Creme since soft openings don't really give the full picture but I can say that this cute, new cafe has definite potential and I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops :)
*July 9, 14 UPDATE*
Went back for another visit the other day and tried the Mango Passionfruit creme brulee with another Liege waffle topped with Nutella and Bailey's infused vanilla ice cream. Creme brulee was just as good as last time - smooth and very flavourful with a nice crisp sugar top. The flavour was interesting since my friend and I have never had a mango based creme brulee before but I'm delighted to report that it was enjoyable. Remember how I still had a few doubts in the liege waffle last time? Well this time around, no complaints whatsoever. The pearl sugar crunch and chewiness of the waffle was clearly on point. A crisp exterior and chewy interior matched with a lovely dose of ice cream and nutty sauce. This may be my favourite liege waffle in Vancouver!
10/10 for food!
