Surrey isn't a place I've really took the time to explore but lucky for me, my summer semester this year is mostly in the area. The first of the places on my Surrey food list is Sushi & Roll, a decently large Japanese restaurant located just a block away from Surrey Central and run by a friendly group of Koreans. Sadly I didn't have the time to sit and dine so I opted for take out. The menu is massive and has a crazy amount of variety and unique combinations for some of the lowest prices I've ever seen for quality rolls. I finally settled for the Crazy Rabbit and PS I Love You roll which both featured an insane amount of delicious ingredients. The Crazy Rabbit roll is definitely different if you've ever had rice-less maki before. The snow crab meat, unagi, and tamago is wrapped carefully in a long strip of cucumber and topped with tempura batter flakes, tobiko, and spicy house mayo. Crunchy, savoury, sweet, creamy, and amazing. I could eat this everyday if I could. The PS I Love You roll is something a bit more normalbut nevertheless delicious: crab meat, tamago, avocado covered with a slice of salmon and drizzled with more amazing house mayo and tobiko.
Food quality: 9.5/10 (Quality quality sushi with evidently quality ingredients. I need more of this quality sushi in my life.)
Service: N/A (I had take out!)
Atmosphere: 8/10 ( Nice and simple typical Japanese restaurant decor but there's a lot of space and an abundance of seating.)
Price/affordability: 9.5/10 (Both the specialty rolls I ordered were around, if not under, $8 and that is a crazy deal for the generous amount of quality ingredients in every roll. Once again, I don't think I've ever seen such good sushi for this low of a price. Plus, food always tastes better when you feel like you've paid good about how much you paid for it to go into your stomach.)
Would I go back/recommend this place?: YES. I'll be roaming around Surrey this summer but I know I won't be able to go without Sushi & Roll for too long. I fee like I've truly found a deal that makes both my stomach and my wallet happy. Funny how even though I live in Richmond, which boasts about the having the most and best Asian food in the city, I've really come to develop a soft spot for Sushi & Roll. I'll be back to try not only more of their menu, but some of their daily specials as well. I guess it's time to bring my friends here!
